The Gibbons Conservation Center is nearly halfway to its June fundraising goal, which will generously be matched. That leaves one week to double your donation.

While summer can be a fun time for vacations and activities every year, the center sees a decline in visitors, but expenses stay the same. This year two donors are willing to make a matching gift up to $15,000 though the end of June.

At this writing, 77 percent of that $15,000 June fundraising goal had been reached.

    To donate visit Donate.

Some other goals the public has recently helped accomplish include finding sponsors for all of the gibbons at the center for 2025, and all the funding needed to complete Rocky’s House.

  • This month, the State Assembly passed our proposed 2025-26 budget - and in the face of a tough budget year, I'm proud to share that we've secured major victories that reflect our community's values, protecting what matters most without raising taxes on individuals, families, or small businesses.

We fought for and won funding to keep healthcare affordable, protect services for seniors and people with disabilities, support youth mental health, and ensure crime victim services remain intact. We invested in affordable housing and home ownership, wildfire protection, and protected public education, including CSUN and College of the Canyons. And we made sure big banks, not working people, are contributing their fair share to help close the gap.

In addition to this people-centered budget, we've advanced a strong package of legislation focused on the challenges we hear about every day - making life more affordable, strengthening public safety, protecting consumers, supporting veterans and seniors, and responding to the ongoing public health crisis at the Chiquita Canyon Landfill. This is not the end of the line for us though; proposed federal cuts could further threaten healthcare, social security and Medicare along with education and VA benefits. We will continue to fight for our community every step of the way.

Despite holding the line for our community in our state budget, I know people need more relief on skyrocketing costs and ensuring everyone in our community is safe. Take a look at our legislative work at the Capitol, which is tied directly to the needs of our community:

    Making Life More Affordable

    • Ratepayer Relief Act (AB 1020): Ensures utility companies pass public savings on to customers. *
    • Veterans' Property Tax Exemption (ACA 5): Provides additional tax exemptions to veterans to help access to housing relief.
    • Pay it Forward (AB 1241): Establishes tuition support for students facing financial hardship (two-year bill).
    • Senior Fraud Reimbursement Act (AB 909): Protects seniors from scams by requiring banks to prevent and reimburse fraud (two-year bill).
    • Patient Debt Prevention Act (AB 1312): Ensures hospitals pre-screen patients for financial assistance before billing. *
    • Military Pension Tax Exemption - AB 53 (Coauthor): Makes up to $20,000 in military pension pay tax-free! *

    Investing in Public Safety

    • Law Enforcement Pension Tax Exemption (AB 814): Offers retired peace officers state income tax relief (held in committee).
    • Victim and Witness Protection Act (AB 535): Strengthens protections for court witnesses who are survivors of domestic violence, trafficking, and abuse. *
    • Small Business Retail Theft Grant Program (AB 949): Helps businesses pay for security upgrades. *
    • Justin Kropp Safety Act (AB 365): Requires AEDs at high- and low-voltage worksites to prevent death by electrocution. *

Relief for Chiquita Canyon Landfill Impacted Communities

    • Chiquita Canyon Tax Relief Act (AB 27): Ensures aid to landfill-impacted residents isn't taxed or counted against benefits.*
    • Landfill Fire Safety Act (AB 28): Requires early warnings and state oversight to prevent public health disasters like the Chiquita Canyon Landfill. *

    Supporting Veterans and Military Families

    • Veterans Education Assistance Act (AB 1509): Strengthens oversight of programs using G.I. Bill benefits. *

    Protecting Consumers

    • Timely Care Act (AB 539): Extends insurance approvals for medical treatment from 60 days to one year. *
    • Click-to-Cancel 2.0 (AB 656): Requires platforms to let users easily delete their accounts and take their data with them. *

Housing Solutions, Planning, and Wildlife Recovery

    • Expediting State Housing Permits (AB 301): Cuts red tape by holding state agencies to timely housing permit reviews. *
    • Foster Youth Housing Stability (AB 534): Makes it easier for service providers to build housing for youth exiting foster care. *
    • Fire Victim Mortgage Forbearance (AB 238) (Coauthor): Provides relief for families recovering from wildfires.
    • Roads to Resilience Act (AB 1132): Improves CalTrans emergency planning to protect communities during floods, fires, and disasters.

    Expanding Access to Healthcare

    • Health Coverage Waiting Period Transparency (AB 1418): Tracks and reports delays in employer-sponsored insurance. *
    • Reproductive Healthcare Access and Information Act (AB 1500): Expands and improves abortion.ca.gov to counter misinformation and improve public access.

    * passed assembly floor

As we move forward in the legislative year, I remain committed to advancing legislation that reflects the values and priorities of our community, and to making sure your voice continues to guide the work we do.

Thank you for allowing me the privilege of representing you. I look forward to the continued journey ahead and the positive impact we can make together.

    Location: North County

    Phase: Construction

    Type: Less Traffic

Santa Clarita, which is now the third-largest city in LA County, is expected to increase its population by more than 25,000 people by 2035 as documented in the City of Santa Clarita’s One Vision One Valley Plan. To prepare for this increase and relieve congestion in the Santa Clarita Valley, Metro and Caltrans District 7, will be making operational and safety enhancements along the Interstate 5 (I-5) freeway in the northern part of LA County from the State Route 14 (SR-14) interchange in Santa Clarita to just south of Parker Rd in Castaic.

    The enhancements include:

    • Addition of one High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV)/carpool lane in each direction along I-5
    • Extension of the northbound truck lane from SR-14 to Calgrove Bl
    • Addition of southbound truck lane from Calgrove Bl to SR-14
    • Addition of soundwalls at four locations
    • Replacement of Weldon Canyon Bridge
    • Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) improvements between the I-405 and I-210 interchanges
    • Addition of auxiliary lanes (additional outside lanes extending between an on-ramp and a subsequent off-ramp).

These enhancements will augment safety on the freeway by increasing access for merging and offering trucks a separate lane from the general-purpose lanes (GPLs) and are expected to provide a much faster and smoother driving experience in the area for locals and travelers.  Additionally, they are part of a multi-phase program identified in Metro’s Long Range Transportation Plan to ease congestion in LA County.

  • California Institute of the Arts was recently named in The Hollywood Reporter’s inaugural Top Animation Schools list for 2025.

With programs in Character Animation (BFA) and Experimental Animation (BFA, MFA), both housed in the School of Film/Video, CalArts was selected based on survey responses from animation organizations including ASIFA-Hollywood, the Animation Guild, Black N Animated and LatinX in Animation. The responses were weighted using Department of Education key data, including graduation and retention rates, cost, and other metrics.

The Hollywood Reporter issue published on June 6 listed the following information about CalArts:

“Founded by Roy and Walt Disney in 1961, the highly selective school boasts a prestigious alumni network including Glen Keane (The Little Mermaid) and Genndy Tartakovsky (Primal), and an annual opportunity to produce a student short. Alongside a summer animation residency, the BFA and MFA in experimental animation focus on developing personal aesthetics, while the BFA in character animation focuses on artistic and technical training in traditional and CGI animation, including sound effects. The annual Producers’ Show garners attendance from major studios.”

Joining CalArts on the list are, in alphabetical order:

ArtCenter College of Design; Pasadena, California

    Brigham Young University; Provo, Utah

Cal State University; Long Beach, California

    DePaul University; Chicago

    Gnomon; Los Angeles

    New York University; New York

Rhode Island School of Design; Providence, Rhode Island

Ringling College of Art and Design; Sarasota, Florida

San José State University; San Jose, California

Savannah College of Art and Design; Savannah, Georgia

School of Visual Arts; New York

University of Southern California; Los Angeles

The Hollywood Reporter noted that animation is at an “inflection point” as it faces the ongoing impact of economic forces as well as the rapid-growth of AI. But it also pointed out that schools and animation organizations are already addressing these challenges through individual and multiyear courses as well as industry events.

  • 18 Jun 2025 by U.S. Chamber of Commerce

Tom Sullivan, U.S. Chamber Senior Vice President for Small Business Policy, joined America’s Small Business Network this week to discuss how tariffs are hindering small business growth.

    • “We hear one word over and over and over again, and that is uncertainty,” he said.

Why it matters: Of the 230,000 U.S. importers, 97% are small businesses. For many of them, a tariff increase can significantly impact their bottom line.

    • With tight profit margins and limited financial flexibility, they may have to raise prices, absorb extra costs, or cut back on inventory and operations in their communities.

Sullivan said the U.S. Chamber was receiving calls from small businesses saying, “We need the tariffs to go down. Please help us navigate through this time.”

Small businesses across the country have been telling us how tariffs are hurting their ability to be competitive and stay in business:

    • “For 33 years, Bike Friday has hand-built bicycles in our factory in Eugene, Oregon,” said Hanna Scholz, president of the company. “We must import some things. Our bikes are only possible through a global supply chain—some bike parts have never been made in the USA, ever... Now we have lost 30-40% of our customers, even our USA customer orders are down out of concern for the economy. Our costs are up. Tariffs could kill us and our industry!”

What we’re doing: The U.S. Chamber is calling for immediate tariff relief for small businesses and to provide tariff exclusions for products that cannot be made in the U.S. or threaten American jobs.

  • Streamlining business operations can sound like a daunting task. But if you use a simple, methodical approach, you can make a big difference without overhauling everything you do!

At Elevate, we focus on helping our clients create systems to streamline and automate their operations so they can avoid getting stressed out, overworked, and overwhelmed.

When things run smoothly (often without your direct input!), everyone benefits: you, your team, and your clients or customers.

Today, we’re looking at the importance of streamlining operations, 4 key areas of business you should prioritize when you get serious about leveling up your operations, and some of the most common roadblocks or challenges to building a more efficiently run business.

Let’s make work less stressful and more productive this year!

Why does streamlining business operations matter?

A clean, efficient business is more productive, more efficient, and easier to scale than a messy, slow business that doesn’t have clearly defined systems, procedures, and automations in place.

The main reasons you should prioritize streamlining your operations include:

    • Cost effectiveness: as things get more expensive, saving time means saving money, and this can have a huge impact on your overall profit margins

    • Customer expectations: with overnight deliveries and increasing speed of service, clients expect you to keep up with their fast-paced demands

    • Scaling + growth: you can’t scale chaos! Streamlining your operations will make it much easier to grow

    • Peace of mind: running a streamlined business means less work on your end and more free time for things like vision casting, creative problem solving, and generating revenue

When your operations are streamlined, it’s much easier to delegate tasks and responsibilities to others. They understand what needs to happen, and you don’t have to constantly check in or answer questions.

As CEO, you can’t be in charge of every tiny detail of how the business runs. (That’s not your job!) Streamlining gives you the opportunity to clean everything up, know who is in charge of what, and take advantage of automations wherever possible.

If you’ve been feeling like you need to clone yourself or work 80 hours a week in order to keep things going, that’s a sure sign it’s time to streamline your operations!

Which areas of your operations should you streamline first?

If you’re staring down a messy business (and don’t feel bad if you are, lots of very successful CEOs are in need of some operational cleanup!), it can be hard to know where to start making changes.

We recommend starting with the things that suck up the most of your time and can be easily streamlined without a massive overhaul or reconfiguration.

You want to get some small, meaningful wins in place before you tackle any larger, systemic issues.

For most CEOs, leaders, and business owners, you’ll want to start with:

    1. Inbox management

    2. Calendar management

    3. Document management

    4. Systems + procedures

Within each of these areas, there are smaller tasks that can be quickly streamlined. If you want to streamline your inbox management, for example, you may want to start by cleaning up your existing inbox before setting up some basic rules and automations to keep it clean moving forward.

When you’re ready to dive in and start doing the work, click on the link for the area listed above for our professional “best tips” you can implement immediately.

What challenges get in the way of streamlining business operations?

Streamlining is a buzzword for a reason. Everyone knows they should be doing it… but it’s actually much harder to put this knowledge into practice than expected.

Understanding the common challenges that get in the way of streamlining can help you make a plan for avoiding them and proactively manage the process from the beginning.

One of the biggest problems we see with our clients is that you’re simply too close to the day-to-day to understand where changes are needed. It can feel like things are working “fine” because you’re managing every part of a system or process yourself… but that’s not your job.

Bringing in an outside expert is often the best way to identify inefficiencies and most effectively streamline operations.

Your team can propose another common challenge. Most people don’t love the idea of change, which can lead to team members being resistant to learning a new system or way of doing things, even if it’s more efficient or easier.

Combat this roadblock by involving your team in the streamlining process. Ask for their input, take time to understand their pushback (sometimes it’s valid!), and give them a sense of ownership in the process.

Keeping things streamlined once you’ve cleaned them up is a huge issue. If you don’t have clear SOPs that are customized to each system and automation you put in place, details will be missed, and things will quickly become messy again. It’s also hard for different contributors to stay on top of their responsibilities if they aren’t clearly written out and communicated.

Support your streamlining efforts with a tailored SOP Library that captures all your new systems in detail and makes it easy for anyone to come in and follow the procedure to keep things neat, organized, and efficient for years to come.

    Need help streamlining?

Whether you need an outside expert who can see the big picture or a team of operational pros who can create and document new systems and automations, our team at Elevate is here for you.

A Blueprint for Enhanced Public Safety

Southern California Edison (SCE) filed its Wildfire Mitigation Plan (WMP) for 2026-2028 with the California Office of Energy Infrastructure Safety (OEIS).

This three-year plan is a blueprint for reducing wildfire risks in our service area. While this WMP builds on past plans, we are launching several pilot programs to test new tools and tactics to improve our mitigation efforts. Opening comments begin in late June with a draft decision around mid-August.

"We developed our three-year plan with a layered defense strategy to help safeguard our communities against wildfire threats," said Steven Powell, president and CEO of SCE. "The heartbreaking January wildfires in Southern California underscore the importance and urgency in advancing mitigations and using new tools to increase infrastructure resiliency and safety. While wildfire risk can never be fully eliminated, we continue to harden the grid and invest in innovative approaches to bring us as close to zero as possible.”

While we develop new tools, Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) will remain an integral part of SCE's strategy to reduce the risk of fire during dangerous weather conditions. To help prepare your community for these electrical disruptions, local and tribal governments are advised to incorporate contingency plans in your Local Hazard Mitigation Plans, share SCE messaging through local channels, and contact SCE to identify sites able to host Community Resource Centers.

Our Wildfire Mitigation Plan reflects our priorities — from hardening the grid to balancing public safety, affordability and a commitment to the communities where we live and serve.

    Power on Beverly Hills

The city of Beverly Hills has launched an innovative energy resiliency pilot program for homeowners and businesses called Power On BH. This service offers no-cost technical advice to property owners on how they can withstand power outages. The city has partnered with EcoMotion to provide guidance through June, helping property owners identify options such as solar generation, critical energy loads, and battery storage. Additionally, the city has included links to all critical SCE resiliency programs, including the Self-Generation Incentive Program, marketplace for portable battery and generator rebates, critical care battery backup, as well as the outage page and tips.

SCE has actively supported Beverly Hill's development of a resiliency action plan. We hope this program serves as a valuable model for other cities, demonstrating effective strategies to enhance community resilience and energy reliability in preparation for emergencies and natural disasters.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What should I do if I encounter a downed power line?

Answer: If you encounter a downed power line, always assume it is energized and dangerous. Stay at least 100 feet away from the wire. From a safe distance, call 911 and inform the operator that it's an electrical emergency.

If a wire falls on or near your vehicle, stay inside and call 911. Warn others to stay away. If you must leave the vehicle due to fire or other danger, jump clear without touching the vehicle and the ground at the same time. Shuffle away with small steps, keeping your feet close together. Do not return to the vehicle until utility workers say it is safe.
